Barbiecore Summer 2022

Love it or leave it, the Barbiecore trend is here for summer!  Steamy hot days, bright neon colors, bold and chunky prints pave the way for this trend.  The iconic Mattel doll has been making the rounds this summer inspired by the Greta Gerwig comedy: Barbie with Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling as Ken rocking the iconic matching outfits.  Costume designer for ‘Barbie’ Jacueline Durran has many credits to her name including two Academy Awards. But we have to wait until summer 2023 to see her interpretation of all things Barbie!

Barbie imitates life or vice versa?

Barbie’s all over favorite color pink and bleach blond bombshell hair has been gaining momentum long before the cameras started rolling for the movie this summer.  If art imitates life, life has been imitating Barbie since: 1959!  Barbie has inspired the runway and fashion for years. Moschino’s brand DNA and campy vibes are a solid nod to Barbie as far back as 2015.  The mix of high-low in the Spring 2015 Ready-To-Wear collection was all things Barbie and allowed us to return back to childhood and to take life less seriously for a moment.

Moschino is not the only designer to interpret this trend.  Iconic Italian fashion house Valentino’s entire fall collection blasted the runways with hot pink.  Pink is fun and playful!  When asked by Forbes magazine about the collection, Valentino’s creative director, Pierpaolo Piccioli explained that the collection is “a liberation from the need for realism.” Pink has always been Barbie’s favorite color and she even has her own signature color commemorated by Pantone or ‘Barbie Pink’ Pantone shade PMS 219.
